Do You Have Unexplained Low Back Pain?

If sitting down feels like you’re perched on a rock, or if you’ve struggled with persistent low back pain and nerve-related symptoms, you’re not alone. These issues are often dismissed, but what if there’s more to your pain than meets the eye? For many, the answer lies in a little-known spinal condition: Tarlov Cysts.

What Are Tarlov Cysts?

Tarlov Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form at the base of the spine, within the sacral region, although they can also be found at any level of the spinal cord. Though they’re frequently identified on MRIs, they’re often dismissed as “incidental findings”—meaning they’re considered harmless by many medical professionals, which often results in these findings rarely being shared with the patient. Unfortunately, however, for thousands of people, these cysts are anything but harmless.

The Overlooked Symptoms

Tarlov Cysts can press on nearby nerves, causing a wide range of debilitating symptoms, including:

- Pain when sitting, is often described as feeling like you’re sitting on a rock.

- Chronic low back pain.

- Shooting nerve pain in the legs, hips, or buttocks.

- Weakness, numbness, or tingling in the legs or feet.

- Bowel, bladder, or sexual dysfunction.

These symptoms can significantly impact daily life, yet many patients go years without an accurate diagnosis.

Why Are Tarlov Cysts Often Ignored?

One reason Tarlov Cysts are overlooked is the lack of awareness among healthcare providers. Radiologists often fail to mention them in imaging reports, and even when noted, they’re commonly dismissed as irrelevant unless they’re visibly large. This leaves patients in a frustrating cycle of chronic pain and unanswered questions.

The Cost of Misdiagnosis

Without a proper diagnosis, patients may be told their pain is due to stress, aging, or other vague explanations. Some are even labeled as “hypochondriacs” or misdiagnosed with unrelated conditions. This not only delays effective treatment but can also lead to worsening symptoms and unnecessary emotional strain.

How to Advocate for Yourself

If these symptoms sound familiar, it’s time to take action:

1. Ask Questions: When reviewing imaging results, ask your doctor to check for Tarlov Cysts.

2. Get a Second Opinion: If your concerns are dismissed, don’t hesitate to seek out another medical professional.

3. Learn About Testing: Symptomatic Tarlov Cysts can often be confirmed through targeted imaging and testing.

How the Tarlov Cyst Society Can Help

The Tarlov Cyst Society is dedicated to raising awareness and improving care for patients with Tarlov Cysts. We’re working to educate medical professionals and advocate for consistent reporting protocols while also offering daily support to patients on their journey in search of relief.

We’re also developing a Patient Registry to track long-term outcomes, improve treatment protocols, and push for better diagnostic standards. This initiative will pave the way for a brighter future for those living with this misunderstood condition.

Join the Movement

It’s time to shine a light on Tarlov Cysts and give a voice to those who’ve been silenced by misdiagnosis. If you’ve experienced unexplained back pain, nerve pain, or the hallmark symptom of sitting discomfort, we urge you to explore whether Tarlov Cysts might be the cause of your pain and symptoms.

Don’t let your pain be dismissed.
